Getting Media Coverage
I've had success getting coverage in local newspapers, magazines and TV but I'm interested in any tips on getting into the bigger publications and TV shows.
I'm also curious about books. Do the authors seek out the performers or do the performers seek out the authors?
Not sure if it's one of those "hey I busted my butt to figure it out so you can too!" questions, but I figured I'd ask.
Thanks,
Derek

Re: Getting Media Coverage
Here's a funny follow-up to this thread. About 5 hours after I posted this question on here I was contacted by an author about a book deal.
For those of you that don't know, I do some PR for Ses Carny, and thats what all my questions regarding bookings, media, etc. are about.

Re: Getting Media Coverage
It's very difficult to get good publicity. You'll get press coverage for anything but there is no garantee that what they print will be accurate. So far they have got my name wrong, the facts wrong and the details wrong in all of my press cuttings....still I suppose 0 out of 5 isn't that bad.

Re: Getting Media Coverage
Ya they seem to print what THEY find to be interesting instead of the whole story sometimes. For the most part I've been pretty lucky though as far as the name and info part goes. There was one magazine that printed the article with half the text missing because it ran off the end of the page when it was printed and I guess they saw no need to fix it. Made for some interesting reading though.

Re: Getting Media Coverage
I haven't actually dealt much with this. It has been a cascade effect for me. I did a show. A photographer saw my fire plume rise up and came to see what it was. He took a business card and called later. That article turned into a newspiece. That news piece turned into another magazine article. Which turned into a performance at the Center for Inquiry. Which lead to a book deal with Joe Nickel's new book (due out in the fall) "Secrets of the Sideshow" (tentatively named).
All of my encounters thusfar have been excellent and respectful.
How do you go about sending out publicity to media? I have this belief that it anything I send will most likely be circular filed, as much I would like to work more with them. I have looked into it and have not really received a whole lot of useful information.
In many ways I am still quite green and appreciate the information, time and patience tremendously. Thanks!

Press Packets
Since my last post I have learned about press packets, which are a pain but helpful.
To announce the coming of a show to a town or the release of a new show/class, giveaways, etc...
Book deals I still think are catch as catch can, as seeking out an author (unless you want the entire book to be about Ses) is like finding a needle in a haystack.
What type of art organizations do you belong to? Or really, does your state have? Sometimes they can be a great way to connect.
Kindest Regards,
Pele
