Getting work performing

Hi all

Does anyone here primarly concentrate on getting bookings through agents, the web, management, all of the above, some other way?

The work I do through the sideshow circus I co-manage is pretty much spread 40/60 between agents and work gained through website enquiries at my two sites. I generally quote the same amount in both cases and let agents put a percentage on top of that, so long as it isn't so much that we end up looking bad on the day.

When I first started out, and I was very green I did a show for a private event where I felt that though they had enjoyed the show, there was still some heat on me. It turned out that the heat was down to the fact that they had paid 500 for the pleasure of seeing me do a 15 minute spot. I felt at the time that my 15 minutes was worth maybe 100 of the 150 I was getting. Needless to say I was not a happy camper. Since then I have always made sure to confirm what percentage the agent is charging, and I advise anyone new to performing to do the same!

Have fun

Agents probably deserve a thread of their own.

I expect most performers will have encountered great, good, bad and down right criminal agents. I certainly have, and I prefer now to avoid using them.

Having said that, I do use one agent and he works very hard so I don't grudge him his fee.

Word of mouth, though, is the best kind of advertising you can get. It's something you obviously have to develop, but you can also do something more proactive like joining an actual word of mouth organisation like Business Network International.

Hi Mal

I think we have been pretty lucky with agents really. There has been a few problems, but overall our experience has been good.

Business network international, never heard of that, I will look them up on google emoticon

BNI - http://www.bni.com

I'm a member of my local chapter where I represent my copywriting agency - works well for me, but then performing is a different kettle of fish. Maybe if you marketed yourself as corporate entertainment.

I usually get most of my gigs through people that are in the biz or in the know. Furry Couch has gotten me numerous gigs, as well as putting in a good word to venues here and there. Todd Robbins has been invaluable as far as shows and contact with new venues. Rev. Frankie Love (Franco form Sideshow Gathering), James Taylor, and more... all these guys put together outweigh ANY agent out there as far as being a fresh young act (like myself). The agent or rep thing scares me actually. I know you can feasibly get more money for shows, but what's it going to end up looking like after they take their "cut"? Word of mouth is good too. I am constantly making flyers and handing them out prior to shows, mailing out press releases to local newspapers and media, things like that. IF you don't do it, nobody else will.

Luck to all,
TGN

Nipps makes a good point. There are a lot to be said for networking. Knowing people who know people. I think a great vehicle for you all is the www.sideshowcentral.com site. If you use the very well put together bio page and promote the hell out of that site I think it can be a potentially excellent well to draw from!! Also Feel free to link up to www.sideshowgathering.com.

Good point Franco, though my personal experience with agents has largely been good, maybe I have just been lucky but I have only had a small percentage of agents who have caused any problems.

Cheers

David

I forget to add. I will be putting the sideshow central banner at the top of the forum page from next month, Then I might put my own up for a month, after that, who ever comes foward first, do you have a banner for the gathering Franco? emoticon

Mr. Nippelini,

I would assume very few have the talent or nerve to do what you do, business seems like it would be swinging from your.....
