Stage Names
I guess many performers use a stage name. What would be cool to know is what yours is and how you came to it. And let us know your real name too!
I'll start...
Well, it won't be an earth-shattering surprise to learn that my stage name is Mal Fortune. I used to refer to myself as "the missing link between man and lunacy", but have dropped that strap line now.
Because I had another business - my copywriting agency - it made it much easier to use two different names; that's why I looked for a stage name.
The name that my wife and family know me by is Calum, which is also the Scots Gaelic - (which, if you're interested is correctly pronounced as in GALIK, not GAY-LIK, which is Irish) - for Malcolm, hence Mal.

Re: Stage Names
Well I guess Im next. My name is Doctor Zodiac. First because the domain name drzodiac.com is taken by some quack who actually believes hes psychic. Second, its an homage to my pop (father) who passed away a few years ago.
You see, mt father favorite detective character was Charlie Chan, and his arch enemy in Charlie Chan at Treasure Island" was of course Doctor Zodiac. As many know my real name is Scott. I was thinking of using the name Skeeter, the not so bad (magician), for some renfaire work, but then I got wise and realized I'm damn good!
Sincerly Skeeter, Doc, Scott
--- The mystifying, dazzling, unscrupulous, and just plain amazing ............ Doctor Zodiac..... (Scott)

Re: Stage Names
Bet you can't guess what my stage name is
Why Straitjacket? Cos we started the Straitjacket Circus and people starting saying, 'are you one of the Straitjackets?' when we arrived at gigs, so when I said yes, I am David, the two kinda got together by themselves.
David

Re: Stage Names
What a question. I get asked it many times.
The Great - Well, I am the greatest... actually from the Great Omi
Nip - Nipples
pul - Pulling (as in towing)
ini - Just kinda finishes off the name well. I guess from Houdini.
there it is... The Great Nippulini!
Oh and the real name remains the truest mystery!
Bwah-hahahahahaha

Re: Stage Names
I will be performing as Damien Blade Sword Swallower. Damien is a Greek name meaning sweet and harmless, Blade is an American name meaning knife or sword. Damien Blade = Harmless Sword. My real name is Danny.

Re: Stage Names
Charon Henning is my true and legal name, but the spelling's been tweaked a bit on the first part. I was born a "Karen" and things got dicey in High School with three or four other Karen's in each of my classes. I got sick of being confused with the others and having "D" papers handed back to me while the others were happily receiving my "A" papers (as in: the freak must've gotten the "D", she can't be THAT bright ... ). So I began spelling it "Charon", drawn from my various books on mythology, and it fit right well. My English professors in college especially appreciated it.
After 9/11 I had to get it switched legally just to be able to get onto an airplane, so that's what my driver's license reads these days.
I use simply the first name on the stage. It has so many connotations that I want an audience to really wonder what they'll be getting.

Re: Stage Names
I actually have had the nickname Crispy for years originally it was a name friends gave me because of the afro I had in highschool. It just so happened that when I got back into performing it was first as a fire performer and it made a good joke whenever I had a close call (almost lived up to my name with that one).
As for real names I only use mine for paychecks...

Re: Stage Names
When I put my act together years ago I wanted a name that went well with 'Carnival Of Wonders" which is what I had decided to call the show. My name is Ben and my grandmother always called me Bennie (that is her spelling too) so I just fell into SideShow Bennie. Of course, everyone spells Bennie as Benny. The headline in the Tattoo Savage article spelled it SideShow Benny and that was printed on top of a photo of my banner which had it spelled correctly. I just shake my head and go on.
Of course, I have been called many many things over the past 9 years. SideShow Bob, SideShow Vinnie (that was on the program of a tattoo convention I did) and one crazy night with a bunch of bikers and several bottles of tequila, I was called SideShow Sally but I don't like to talk about that...
And by the way: I do know The Great Nippulini's real name. That info can go to the highest bidder. (Hey, Nips! I'll split the profits with you...LOL)
SideShow Bennie aka Benjamin Wade
