Gates of Fire
196?

A load of old cobblers is what this film is. A French entry into the desert action genre, this film makes no sense whatsoever. I don’t know if this is because of the bad dubbing, but it just is ludicrous. The film is about a group of 4 French nurses and a doctor captured by a small German Afrika Korps patrol around the time of El Alamein. There are the standard minefield, lack of water and stuck in sand desert film clichés, and few flashes of tit!!! and not a lot else.

The action makes no sense, the Germans begin by not feeding the prisoners, then suddenly have enough water and food to spare, and at no point is it explained what the Germans are doing, and where they are going, and why they bothered to burden themselves with prisoners in the first place. THE most confusing scene is when the nurses are dropped a message from a British plane saying that the British have scored a massive victory and that Rommel is retreating, and the Germans start cheering and laughing. What is going on, has the translation for the dubbed version changed the news from a German victory to an Allied one? Are the Germans really goodies? I really have no idea. Also this plane drops them a big block of ice, now where that has come from is anybody’s guess. Basically a continental piece of crap – bad uniforms including the nurses tightly-cut stretchy trousers and details, together with atrocious 60’s haircuts make this a film for die-hard collectors only.
