Joey Boy - 1965

A British army comedy, clearly a copy of the wonderful “Private’s Progress” film, from a decade early. This comedy about a gang of crooked club owners being blackmailed into serving in the Army in Italy doesn’t quite hit the mark despite an obviously talented cast. Basically although the story is sound enough, it just isn’t funny enough. From a military point of view its very interesting to see life in the RASC mule platoons portrayed, and indeed the uniforms and details are pretty good. The cast of TV comics is certainly well known: Harry H Corbett, Stanley Baxter, Reg Varney, Bill Fraser and Lance Percival. Add a few theatrical farce actors; Thorley Walters, Derek Nimmo and Moira Lister and you should have had a sure fire success. What you actually get is a series of not very funny set pieces. Something else that really irritated me is the fact that Bill Fraser (who should know better) has his beret pulled down to the wrong side. Lance Percival is the only one of the cast to really stand out, and poor old Percy Herbert seems to disappear half way through. Anything with such a cast is worth seeing from a nostalgic point of view if nothing else.
