Re: 100 GREATEST WAR FILMS
I thought yesterday's programme was quite disapointing, the following films I think should NOT have been in the list as (in my opinion) they are not war films:
Lacombe Lucien - Drama
Cold Mountain - Romance/Western
Welcome to Sarejevo - Drama
El Cid - Historical Epic
To Be or not to Be - a great comedy, but not a war film
Cromwell - Historical Epic
Love and Death - Comedy
Gone With The wind - Epic Romance
Alexander Nevsky - Historical Epic
Ride With the Devil - Western
Napoleon - Historical Epic
The General - Comedy
When the Wind Blows - not sure how to class this, it's a wonderful film, but not really a war film, perhaps sci-fi or drama
Ran - Historical Epic

Re: 100 GREATEST WAR FILMS
I agree with you Paul, I think that some of the first 50 films should not be regarded as war films. Don’t forget it the Great British public who voted for these films and it’s what they regard as a war film. I think that it's a young audience that voted for these films, so films like Cold Mountain and Ride with the Devil were included.
I would also agree with you that the programme was disappointing, mainly for the comments given by a majority of the film critics, these were mainly a young group, who had never seen films like DUNKIRK, THE MALTA STORY, WESTFRONT 1918, THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE, to name but a few.
But I would do believe that films like CROMWELL, EL CID, RAN, and ALEXANDER NEVSKY should be regarded as war films but in a different time.
Just because they are not 1st or 2nd World war's does not mean thay can be regarded as a war film.
I shall finish the final fifty films today.
Tony

Re: 100 GREATEST WAR FILMS
Ten films I think SHOULD have been on the list, there are many more, but these 10 are definite musts (in my opinion). They are not in any order.
Gettysburg - 1993
Dunkirk - 1958
The Enemy Below - 1957
Sea of Sand - 1959
Battle of Neretva - 1970
A Walk in the sun - 1945
Halls of Montezuma - 1952
Battleground - 1949
Too Late the Hero - 1970
Pork Chop Hill - 1959
Then these 10 possibly should have made the list too.
Dark Blue World - 2002
Escape from Sobibor - 1985
The Odd Angry Shot - 1982
Angels One Five - 1950
****leshell Heroes - 1955
Battle Cry - 1955
The Train - 1965
Battle of the Bulge - 1965
Bridge at Remagen - 1968
Immortal Battalion - 1944
Thoughts anyone?
Paul

Re: 100 GREATEST WAR FILMS
After watching the 100 Greatest War films, I was left more than a little disappointed; I didn't expect to see films such as WELCOME TO SARAJEVO (1997) or EUROPA, EUROPA (1990) OR WHEN THE WIND BLOWS (1986) for example.
What constitutes a war film. Does it have to have combat footage, action, or suspense.
There's a very interesting debate on Britmovie forum.
Let's start a debate on what you regard the best or greatest war films are.
The Dambusters, or The Longest Day or The
Bridge on the River Kwai.
What is your favourite war film?
Why don't we as War film collectors and enthusiasts compile our own 100 Great War Films.
Look forward to hearing from you with what your favourite war films are?
Best regards,
Warfilmbuff

Re: 100 GREATEST WAR FILMS
How do I define a war film???? That's a really tricky one. I suppose for me I consider the American Civil War the first true modern war, so in my own personal definition anything before then is a historical epic. I don't know why I have that rule, but I do.
In terms of the war film as a genre, well I certainly have films in my collection that could easily be classed as a different genre entirely - spy/romance/prison/biography etc etc. How do I decide if a film is a war film? Well I don't have some mathematical equation to decide, a film will either "feel" like a war film, or it won't, it's all a matter of personal taste I suppose.
I think to be a war film, the war has to be more than just the setting, the war has to be the single thing that from the beginning of the movie to the end is effecting the plot, the characters are making the decisions they make because of the war going on around them. So in my opinion Gone With The Wind is NOT a war film, because I feel the characters though influenced by the war would have had a tumultuous relationship anyway. But "Yanks" for example IS a war film (though not a very good one), because the romances only occur because of the war, and evolve because the war is chaging their lives.
So under my own classification Casablanca COULD just about be a war film, BUT it could also have been set in a time of civil riots, industrial action or some other upheaval that would also have put Rick under pressure toe "choose sides" in a struggle. So I suppose it isn't really a war film.
In terms of having combat action, there are some films that although full of action, the action shown is so silly it ends up being nonsense. For example some of the silly Italian made warfilms are just so outrageously camp and idiotic they belong perhaps more in a genre alongside Biggles, Raiders of the Lost Arc and Captain America as fantasy films rather than war films.
Basically the classification of films as war or not is a huge can of worms, I welcome other forum users thoughts.
Paul

Re: 100 GREATEST WAR FILMS
To establish my bonafides, I have seen 33 of the films on the list and liked 60% of those that I have seen.
As with all such lists that, that list films from the better to the best, I think it makes a number of errors. "Gladiator" a better film that "Spartacus." I don't think so.
Actually, of all the films on the list, "Gladiator" is probably the farest thing from a war film on there. One battle makes a war film. I don' think so. But, if that is the benchmark used, than one might as well include . . .
Ben Hur
The Diary of Ann Frank
Fall of the Roman Empire
Flame Over India
The Four Musketeers
Intolerance
The Mission
Start the Revolution Without Me
War and Peace
and any number of Westerns.
The Alamo
Major Dundee
They Died with Their Boots On
Vera Cruz
and especially
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
And here is a baker's dozen of films that are as good, and sometimes better, and probably more closely match the definition of war film, than the films in the bottom 50.
Bataan
The Bridges of Toko-Ri
Damn the Defiant
The Desert Fox
55 Days at Peking
Guadacanal Diary
The Hill
Lionheart
Sink the Bismarck
The War Lord
Waterloo
Young Winston
Zulu Dawn
And while I think the top 50 films are stronger then the bottom 50, here are four films, that are as good, or even better, than those.
Sergeant York
Stalag 17
They Were Expendable
Twelve O'Clock High
I will say something positive. It is good to see "A Bridge Too Far" listed, and so high. If there is a war film on the list that is underrated, than that is the film.
