REVIEWS for the new batch from MGM from 4/19

I bought 4 of the 6 new MGM WW2 DVDs. Here's my thoughts:

BEACH RED
Great movie. MGM has done an awesome job with the DVD. It has been digitally restored. The picture quality is SUPERB, this looks like a film shot in the late 80s not 1967. You can watch it in widescreen, but don't. The film was shot in full frame (1.33:1) and was then matted for theatrical widescreen. The letterbox version is exactly the same as the pan-and-scan version, but information is missing from the top and bottom of the screen. Extras include a nice looking trailer.

AMBUSH BAY
A pretty good movie. Summary of the disc is exactly the same as that of BEACH RED: MGM has done an awesome job with the DVD. It also contains a trailer.

ATTACK ON THE IRON COAST
The transfer here is just a little weaker than that of the prior DVDs; it's not quite as bright but otherwise looks pristine. It's in the proper 1.66:1 letterbox format and includes a fair looking theatrical trailer. The movie isn't all that great, but not as bad as SUBMARINE X-1...

SUBMARINE X-1
Like the prior film, the transfer is just a notch below perfect. It's also in 1.66:1 widescreen format. There's a trailer, but it's not very good. The movie itself is pretty bad.

For $10 each these were great buys.

Re: REVIEWS for the new batch from MGM from 4/19

Hi,

Thanks for these reviews. This is exactly what I wanted this forum to be about. I have all these titles on decent VHS copies direct from UK TV, and now I know that both Ambush Bay and Beach Red were filmed in 1.33-1, I don't think i'll bother upgrading to DVD in a hurry.

Thanks hugely for this information.

Paul
