Noise limiters in pubs

Is anyone else having problems with noise limiters? We play in The Anchor and The Tap and the crowd applause trips the limiter at the end of some songs. Why cant the venues talk to environmental health and get the top end reduced? We are constantly having to switch off valve amps, surge protect gear because of this. Anyone else facing problems?

As a band we can play within the limits, but crowd noise, when we're not playing trips it out!

Personally I don't like playing too loud anyway, but this is a bit over the top. In The Anchor the third hit of the snare tripped it out, before we'd even started!

The Bargemans has a super sensitive one I have heard. I played at the Tap and didnt even touch their one tho, I guess it depends on the position of the sensor and the acoustics of the room. The Anchor room isnt that wide so a lot of noise reflects all at once.

They do have a purpose tho. We have taken to wearing ear plugs when playing live, just to make sure we all hear in a few years time!

Yeah we've had major problems at The Tap, however in fairness last time out they'd re-calibrated it and we didn't trip it once... which was great.

I find them very distracting though cos' you're always watching for the meter peaking out.

When we used to play the Fountain years ago Pam would just yell at us if we were too loud!!!

I think a band knows if they're too loud, limiters just dampen the spirit a bit. I play The Tap on a fairly regular basis, and it is hard to really get into what you're doing if you constantly have one eye behind you, checking the limiter level.

They are a complete pain in the backside. I like to play loud (inlike Habitual who I assume is in the same band as me!!!) as the Amp's just sound better and I get into the music a bit more. You can't play Rock and Metal quietly!!! I did trip the meter at the Tap last week when I kicked in the Solo boost.........what a nightmare.

My Amp is set as low as it will go (it's only a 50 Watt Head aswell). If it has to go any lower, there is just no point in playing anymore. You can't play Rock at jazz/acoustic levels as it looses all dynamics.

It's not a case of just turning the amps down. My vocal has set them off, and I'm no screamer! We should get together and campaign to the powers that be, instead of turning down gigs in venues with noise limiters. I haven't heard of one band who relaxes when there's a limiter to consider, and that means we're not performing at our best. Surely there could be a compromise, let us set our levels to it during the first few numbers, then turn it off and trust us not to turn up!!!

The council, who have the authority to decide who gets what limiter, will only back down when it starts to affect events such as Ventnor Jazz or similar. A jazz horn section is much louder than a rock band, and yes I know they won't be plugged in, but the PA etc will. When it starts to hit the mainstream only then will people start to look at whats happening and how it can potentially kill live music off. Each time a license is reapplied for there is a chance a limiter will go in. Be warned
