Ok..we all know how popular the IOW festival is...everyone and his dog rolls up and turns into music lovers for 3 days. It funny..all those workmates and their aunties, chilling out, getting into it, professing their love of music. Then .... it 's all over for another year. Do these same people turn up at the various pubs and venues around the Island to watch and support the local Island bands? Do they 'eck.It makes me sick. There are so many talented musos , and so many of the pub bands put on a far better and entertaining show than most of the festival acts. AND 99 % of the pub gigs are free....you can even walk out the door at any time if it aint to your liking.

i like to think that i am a proactive music fan who does all he can to keep music live on the island, but in my experience, with the exception of the island's youth, islanders are lazy when it comes to keeping the spirit of music alive - they will shout about it when the right gets taken away from them, and stamp their feet, but when island music needs an audience, they're all tucked up at the local boozer cos they can't be arsed to support their local scene and make an effort to get to the venues where some truly outstanding music is being played

there are only a handful of people on the isle of wight who actively promote music and try to get the best bands together to put on great gigs - however, this costs money, and if people dont buy tickets to go to these gigs, the promotors can't put them on

there are even fewer island promotors that actually make a decent profit out of their gigs, and who do it mainly to break even and for the love of what they do, and still very little support is given

we all want to be successful in what we do, and of course we all want to make money out of our efforts, but if they aren't even breaking even - why would they continue trying?

We cannot say that the reason tickets aren't sold is because of the lack of quality of gigs, fair enough, if the acts are crap then noone will pay, but that just aint true, the Island has top quality acts playing all over the place, but unfortunately Islanders are a lazy bunch who want everything for free and want it all dumped in their laps, and if not, they'll stick to their local pubs, with the aging cover bands and get drunk on cheap lager

and because of this, the Island Music Scene will dry up, noone will want to play here, we'll lose our limited facilities, and return to the OAP centre of the universe.

why are we losing all our good bands to venues on the mainland? simply because island audiences are too tight to pay for these bands time - so they move away, to where they are appreciated - who wouldn't?

if you feel differently, then shout about it, do something about, make a difference and make an effort and go to these gigs, they are fantastic - talk about them - get your friends to talk about them, and be proactive, cos if we don't, we'll lose it all - and I for one don't want that to happen - I happen to love the Island, and am proud of our musical heritage.

Hear Hear!

I'm with FF, take the Platform One / Curious Generation nights for example. Curious Generation have made the affort to collect top new London acts, pay horrendous ferry fares, book ryde theatre, and promote on a tiny rock that nobody else cares about - and what have they got in return? The turnout to both previous gigs has been disappointing to say the least, and the majority of the people that do show up really get into the Island bands they've heard before, then don't give the London acts the time of day.

So lets see more people at The Venue for the night CG night, 'eh?
